Description:

Rainbow Shiners are a native fish to North America, typically found in the rivers of Alabama and Tennessee. They are said to come in two color strains: blue and red. This is the blue strain, which can be distinguished by the heavier amount of blue found on the head, body, and fins. Males will have more color than females, especially when they enter their breeding colors. When Rainbow Shiners fire up, males turn bright red, and the colors are so intense they look like they’re glowing! Females also get a bit more red in them when they are ready to breed. Rainbow Shiners are actually a coldwater fish, and do better in temperatures ranging from 50F to 72F. Since they are found in rivers and streams, it is recommended to keep them in aquariums with a good amount of water movement. Overall, they are an active and fun fish to watch once they reach maturity. Note: Adult sized shiners may need more time to grow before they display their colors.
